Big Hair is Beautiful!

I love my daughter's hair in all it's varieties! Q's hair amazes me sometimes :)  For today's style, you need NON-detangled hair, and leave it dry for styling! (Not my norm, I know, but "variety is the spice of life", after all, right?!) And anyway, how could I mess with perfection?

This is how she woke up that morning - read on to see what we did with it!

A Teenage Curly Hair Interview - Anissa

It's my pleasure to be able to share another Curly Hair Interview with you today! This interview is with Anissa, a Curly Hairdo Ideas reader!

She writes: "I used to absolutely hate and wish everyday for straight hair because I didn't know the proper way to care for my crazy curly hair. I now use no shampoo products no matter my mom's protests. I love my curly hair and live for the advice written about for curls on this blog! Thanks so much!!"

(awww! shucks! Thank YOU Anissa! You're makin' me blush over here!)

Read on for the rest of her thoughts about curls!  ....

Caucasion Curly Hair

(Disclaimer - This post is not intended to offend anyone or any race - it is merely pointing out that there is a serious lack of curl affirmation in our society!)

Box Braids with Cornrows - Toddler Hair for a Horse Show!

You may have noticed a few weeks ago on our Facebook page - a little mention that Q was in her first English riding Horse Show! She did lead-line Dressage and lead-line "jumping", aka walking over poles on the ground. :) She LOVED it! She came home with more prizes than mommy! lol!

So, you may have been wondering what we did with her hair while we camped out in the horse trailer for 3 days? Including 2 FULL days of driving and carseat time??

A Curly Hair Interview! - Curly Jannah

I'm so excited to share another Curly Hair Interview with you today! Today we have the honor of talking with Curly Jannah and her mom, Iman. Make sure you check out their own curly hair blog, Curly Jannah!

My First Attempt at a 5 Strand Braid!

This really isn't as hard as it looks!

Off Center Toddler "French Knot" Braid

Here's a pretty simple (and quick!) braid-looking hairstyle for babies and toddlers, well, even us grown-ups, if we want! :)

Strawllers - GIVEAWAY!!

Yep! You guessed it! Marc Wells, from Strawllers, has offered one Curly Hairdo Ideas reader a set of FREE Strawllers Hair Curlers - color/size of your choice!!

Strawllers!!! Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of our Strawllers Review! If you missed Part 1, be sure to go back and check out what we did with the Strawllers in Q's curly hair! We also talked about what Strawllers are and linked to some more info - so be sure to check that out, too.

Daisy (my lil sis) tried the green strawllers - here's a picture of her slightly wavy hair before any curlers were added so you can see how long it is.

It's time for a review! Have you heard of Strawllers? They are quite the rage right now...

Marc Wells, himself, actually contacted Curly Hairdo Ideas for the purpose of letting us review his product! How cool is that?!?

Creative Claw Clips - Less Hair Damage

This hair style can be done on any head of hair, just play around with different style and sizes of clips to fit your own unique needs!  I created this one by trying to find more styles that are easy on the hair. Curly hair especially is fragile and shouldn't be subjected to harsh treatments day in and day out!

(for more of my thoughts and tips on hair care, see our Tips and Tricks page!)

That goes for products, styles and accessories! But we do like variety :) and we don't want to be boring, right? :)

Quick, Easy, and Last all Day... Step Ponies

To the tune of Olivia's questions about ideas for hairstyles that are quick, easy and last all day, I've come up with another one! Well, actually there are a million variations, but I wanted to point out that Step-Ponies can be very useful in situations like this!

So here's another very simple style, this one could be done on younger ones, too! It doesn't take much baby hair to get this style to work... :) ...

Woooo! Come grab our button!

We have a blog button!!! :D I'm SOO excited about this! I have fallen in love with the little girl in my blog header (Thanks to my friend John at for the graphics!) and now she's in a button, so you can have her too! :D

Just take the code from the text box beneath the button on the right hand sidebar :)

I hope you like her as much as I do! :D lol!!

What hair styles are quick and easy to do, and stay in place all day long?

In answer to this question, asked by my friend Olivia from Write About Birth,  I have compiled a few of my favorites :)

Also be sure to check out anything with the label "I just need it out of her eyes" and "quick and easy" - there you'll find lots of hairstyles for those 'everyday' sort of days whether you have short hair, curly hair, straight hair or long hair - most of them can be adapted! Enjoy!

(click on the pictures below to be taken to the "How To" post for each one!)

Do you have Flyaway Issues?

This question was asked on our Cornrow Post... I had mentioned that I left Q's braids in her hair for 4 days.

In answer to the question about flyaways -

How to style little girls' curly hair without using elastic bands?

So, I was inspired by a challenge awhile ago over at Beads, Braids and Beyond... it was a protective style challenge and part of it was that you weren't allowed to use hair elastics!

Diamond Spin Pins in a Headband Braid

For this hairstyle I started french braiding by Q's right ear, across the top of her head toward the left ear.
I wanted the sides free to curl, so I left them out!
(I was mostly interested in keeping her "bangs" out of her eyes.)

Once I had the braid done across as far as I wanted it, I stopped adding new hair and just regular braided for a bit.

Not So Curly Hair

I receive this email the other day from a Curly Hairdo Ideas reader - and I just wanted to share it because I was so honored! (Yes, I asked Brandi first :) ) When I started the blog I was thinking of doing mostly just styles, and styles that would keep little baby hair out of their cute faces! Well the styles kept coming but the curly hair became a thing of it's own as well! I've been loving what I'm learning about caring for curls and applying a lot of it to my straight hair, too. It's fun to hear that my 'lil ideas can be versatile! Curly or Straight! :D Thanks, Brandi!!

More Questions and Answers about No 'Poo Hair Care

There were enough questions in the responses from my No 'Poo Hair Care post that I thought it would be fun to make a whole new post continuing the conversation. :) Feel free to leave more questions and personal experiences in the comments and maybe we'll get to do this again!

Whoa, awesome--good to know. I may have to do some more research and try this. Probably better environmental effects than having all of that chemical stuff down the drain, too. What about conditioner? No need? ~ LeAnna

How to Keep Hair Stuff Organized when Traveling?

We are a busy family. Who isn't?! and we like to go out of town a lot, too.

I'm also not generally an organized person. (Just ask my mom!!)

More than once I've been in a rush to pack for a day trip or an overnight and frantically panicked that I didn't know what hair supplies to bring! :) Sound familiar?

Well, never fear! I have found a solution!!  A quick, easy way to make sure you are always ready to go and never fear that hair packing will take longer than packing your shoes. :)

Toddler Hair Twists to Ponytail

This one is definitely quick and easy!

With all the talk of going back to school, Q and I have been feeling a bit left out... since we don't go to school, ya know :) She just turned 2 after all. But I thought we could do some fun new "back to school" hairdo's anyway! :D

High Ponytails for Toddlers that don't have enough Hair!

I thought this style turned out just adorable! :D So I had to share. These are Q's very first high ponytails as a toddler. She has worn many many lower pigtails, but after I put these in I realized they were somehow different than usual. ...What do you think??

(I just love that face! lol)

... but there's a secret surprise in back! Q's hair is still too short to put it all up into high ponytails like this and get the hair in back to stay up. So we did some flat twists in back!

I didn't take pictures of how to do flat twists - so let me know if you want visuals!

I'll try to explain it with just words :)
1. Take up a section of hair where you want the twist to start.
2. Divide that section into 2 parts.
3. Twist them around each other! (no need to twist each individually first like some of the twists I do)
4. Then add more hair to one strand
5. Twist
6. Add hair to the other strand
7. Twist
8. Add hair
9. Twist
10. etc!

As you can see in this picture, I am better at twisting counterclockwise than I am clockwise! I need practice...)
I thought we were done, but then I added some korker bows!

Little Cowgirl!

I just thought it would be fun to share this photo with you! :D Here's my curly haired little cowgirl just before she turned 2 years old this summer!

We were kickin' it up 'Country Style' at a local county fair! Wooo!

Curly Hair Interview! - Penny

We have another interviewee! :D I just love these! If you would like to share your pictures or your story with us, please visit THIS page for more details!

Meet Penny and her beautiful daughter, Trinity ...

(Just look at those curls!)
My princess was born with those natural curls too (of course she gets it from me so I did know a little about managing them before hand)
Trinity is 5 yrs old and just LOVES getting her hair done!!! Right now we are on a mission to see how many days of school we can go through without repeating a hairstyle  lol   (FUN!)
Curly Hair Interview Questions:
What is your daily hair routine?  We always take a bath in the morning because her curls are much easier to manage when they are wet and freshly conditioned :) We always use styling mouse if it needs to be pulled back and detangler is a must daily.

Do you have any other "routines" that you add to that, but don't do every day? If so, what are they? Sometimes she wants overly fancy hairdos so with those we must set out extra time just in case a curl or two does not wanna cooperate. We all know those curls can have a mind 'o their own at times :)

Do you use chemicals in your hair? yes (both mine and hers) on hers I use mostly mousse, its light and easier on her hair I think, but in mine I use more gel... and I'll be honest hair spray is a must around here! Between the 2 of us we go though about can a week.

Do you use heat (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) on your hair? Never ever use a hair dryer.  It just makes the curls frizzy.

Have you ever straightened your hair? Why or why not? What were/are your thoughts on straightening curly hair? I have straightened it a few times but not much.  Trinity's curls are much too pretty to ruin them by doing it too often.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair? My favorite way to fix her hair is just putting the front back, out of her face, and letting the curls hang long.  They are almost to her butt so its beautiful down but she would rather it be pulled up in a side pony tail with the tail to the front like braided back or twists

What do you like best about your curls? They are easy!  All I really have to do is wet them, shake our heads, and go! and it looks like we spent hours doing it.
What is the worst hair advice you've ever received? Cut it in layers and cut it often, it will keep curl beter....sooooo not true!!  Talked to seveal different hair dressers and all said, "no dont do it!"   Trinity is 5 and only had a trim once and her curls are still as spingy and gorgous as ever.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be? Don't use a lot of heat products (hair dyer, curling iron, etc.) they kill the curl and dry out your hair.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?!  Let the curls decide what style to do that day.  They have a mind of their own and often don't do what you want. So go with something in the direction the curl is leading you in!

Anything else you would like to add that I haven't thought to ask?! Nope:) just enjoy those beautiful curls!
GREAT ADVICE, Penny! Thank you so much for sharing your story. Trinity is such a doll!
