Old School Braid Out

Share us! Tweet us!! Stumble us, too!!!

I really shouldn't even share this.... but.....

I will!

There was once upon a time I was known as just plain "Karli".  Not "Q's mom!"  Well way back in the days of yore, I also liked to style hair.... but I didn't have a little head of curls to play with. Just my own straight hair.  I certainly hadn't heard the term "braid out" before!

But I liked the look of second day waves from braids!

Caucasian adult braid out

Yes. That's me.

Maybe someday I'll get up the nerve to show you my really long box braids I wore while I was in Europe on a trip during college!

We'll see......

Halloween Costume Ideas

<--- Please "share" us!

This was such a fun post to put together for another edition of the Hair Blogger Carnival! See below for more blogs to check out! We decided to compile posts of all our previous Halloween Costume Ideas that we have used on our curly haired kids! (Though really, the hair was not the focus as you can tell...)

Here was Q's costume idea for her first Halloween ever! She was just three months old

Halloween Costume Ideas

The next year I boycotted trick or treating... I know! I'm a terrible mom! It's okay though, Q was too young to care. and no one in our house really needed all that candy anyway.

I bought some Halloween Costumes after Oct 31st, on SALE!! So she enjoyed dressing up anyway. and didn't even have to cover the costumes with a heavy winter coat!

Halloween Costume Ideas

(notice the hair? This was right before I started this blog! I was trying to be creative...the ribbon wasn't cooperating.)

Halloween Costume Ideas

Last year we spent Halloween at my husband's brother's house, with his wife and daughter... so we all dressed up as the Flintstones! Q was BamBam

Halloween Costume Ideas

The costume is mostly covered by her coat and book, sorry! It's the best one I could find! Loved the wig, tho.  (I made this costume! Couldn't find the best skirt material, so I used some halloween print. That way it did double duty as costume and themed skirt in the days leading up to Oct 31st.)

Happy Halloween!! Be sure to check back to find out what Q decides to dress up as for Halloween this year!!

Let us know if you have any great Halloween Costume Ideas in the comments!! I love hearing from you!

National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month - October

We recently did a post here on Curly Hairdo Ideas about October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know it is also National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month?

Hard topics for October, I guess.

There's not much hope in Pregnancy and Infant Loss.  a Life has been taken from this world. and those of us left can only cry out that it was "too soon!"

and who would blame us?!

~~*~~*~~*~~

Pregnancy and Infant Loss is a delicate subject and I dare say, not many people know how to go about bridging the gap in communication. I know I sure don't! I have friends who have lost pregnancies. I have friends whose children have died.

What do you say?

How can you say anything?! How can you NOT?!

Cara B NATURALLY

Just a quick note to let you know that one of our favorite natural shampoo and conditioner companies (www.mycarab.com) is having a KILLER sale right now!!! Be sure to go pick up your favorite natural hair products NOW!! It only lasts for the next few days, so don't miss out.

Make sure to read our reviews of Cara B NATURALLY if you haven't yet!

and let them know in the comments section of your order that Curly Hairdo Ideas sent you!

Thank you!!!

and  Enjoy!

Hairstyle for Toddlers with Curly Hair

<---------------- "Share" it if you've done a similar style to this on yourself or your daughter before!

This is a cute little easy hairstyle that really shows off your toddler's curly hair. We've done it lots, or variations on the theme! It's quite quick and easy once you get the braiding down, and like I said, it really lets Q's curls shine!

Hairstyle for Toddlers with Curly Hair

Whether I attempt straight parts varies from time to time! But basically I just braid a dutch braid on the top of Q's head, using just the hair on the top, not the sides. I like to leave as many of those curly locks down and out in a hairstyle for toddlers with curly hair! If you have it - ROCK it!

Hairstyle for Toddlers with Curly Hair

and that's all! No tricks, no special effects, just a simple and sleek easy hairstyle for a toddler! Of course you can always dress it up with a bow or flower of your choosing!

As always, please feel free to share your own stories and pictures, I love featuring YOU on this blog too!

Toddler Hairstyle that Lasts

<----------------- Do you "like" it?!? Then help us out and "Share" it! Thanks!!

I wanted a quick hairstyle for my toddler that could last a few days!! Here's the quick toddler hairstyle that will hopefully last awhile.....

Toddler Hairstyle that lasts

I used a lavish amount of Beija-Flor Naturals Cali Pomade for hold as I braided. I also used the Creme Brulee for moisture, especially on her curliest hair.

Toddler Hairstyle that lasts!

Ooops! the part didn't get quite straight! Oh well, what can you expect with a toddler hairstyle?

Toddler Hairstyle that lasts

and there you have it! Four big cornrows, or inside out french braids, or dutch braids, whatever you feel like calling them - into two braided ponytails! It was a relatively quick and easy toddler hairstyle that should last for a few days before becoming too frizzy and fuzzy for my taste and sanity!

If you want a variation on this theme please check out our previous post called Big Cornrows. and while you're there check out how short Q's hair is!!!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - October Hair Carnival

<--------------------------- Don't forget to share my weird ramblings and (hopefully) awesome hairstyles with your friends!

It's Hair Carnival Time again! Guess what the topic was this time? BREAST CANCER AWARENESS! See below for all the other great posts in this series!   Soooo....

Breast Cancer?

Pink.

~~ Ribbons. ~~

Bra color, candy bars, inches of who knows what.

There are some odd things that come to mind when I think of Breast Cancer Awareness.  Facebook has been materialistic in perpetuating some weird associations lately. and does it really help? What is Breast Cancer Awareness anyway?  I mean, are there really a lot of people who haven't heard of it?

I doubt it.

I think most people even know someone who has had a personal encounter with the beast of breast cancer.

So why do we do all this? I don't know. To show support? To let others know they're not alone? To remind ourselves to watch for the signs?

I guess so. So here's another weird association for you...... a Breast Cancer Awareness Hairstyle!! Yep, that's right, a group of (fabulous) women got together and created breast cancer awareness hairstyles!

Because any reason is a good reason for a new hairstyle, right?!  How about a breast cancer awareness hair ribbon?

I attempted to braid the Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon into Q's hair... (a previous how to hairstyle post shows the method I used for the criss cross section.)

and there's the breast cancer awareness hair ribbon! I would have added real ribbon in pink to accent the design - but I realized after I was done braiding that I didn't have any pink ribbon!  *sigh*

Then I did the rest of her hair in small braids all over her head! I love this kind of braiding with curly hair because it helps protect the hair strands and keeps her hair detangled. I ended the braids higher than normal this time so that more of her curly hair showed at the ends.

What do you think of our ideas for breast cancer awareness month?! Probably not something you see every day in October, is it? Go ahead, start a new trend! Breast cancer awareness hairstyles. I'm sure Facebook would be all a-buzz!!

Just quick before I go, I want to throw an idea out here that you may or may not have ever heard about!

Thermography - Breast thermography uses digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) to make diagnostic-quality images of the breasts’ radiant infrared energy for the detection of cancer.  Breast Thermography is non-invasive, uses no radiation, and can produce the earliest signs of detection - which is imperative to healthy recovery from breast cancer.

What is Breast Thermography?

Thermal screenings can also detect many other potential bodily problems - for more information on that, and to hear a very pro-thermography stance, read Dr. Mercola's article on the topic!

And lastly - just because I've seen loved ones go through chemotherapy, and then met survivors who haven't, I just want to challenge you to get to know your options for treatment when (or before!) you're diagnosed with that terrible fate. Chemo and Radiation are NOT the only options.

With all the empathy and compassion in the world, I want to end this Breast Cancer Awareness post with a wish and prayer for all those who have been through the fire and flames of cancer, in any form. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones!!

Have a safe and happy Breast Cancer Awareness MONTH!
